Counseling

Welcome to the NRHS Counseling Page!
At North Royalton High School, our School Counselors are committed to aiding students in educational planning, college and career counseling, and personal development. We operate with an 'open-door' policy, welcoming students during lunch, study hall, open campus, before/after school, with permission during class, and in times of crisis or emotional need. Students are also encouraged to schedule appointments via email—it's simple and convenient! Parents are invited to contact their child's counselor anytime. We value parental involvement and appreciate the opportunity to meet with them.

Ohio school counselors are required to possess a master's degree in counseling, alongside state licensure or endorsement. They undergo specialized training in counseling techniques, academic planning, and social-emotional learning. Continuous education is mandatory to uphold licensure and remain up-to-date with the latest practices.

Roles of the High School Counselor:

School counselors, guided by the principles of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), engage in a range of activities to support students holistically. Here's a glimpse into their dynamic roles:

  • Academic Support: Collaborating with students to set academic goals, plan coursework, and address academic challenges.

  • Social-Emotional Guidance: Providing individual and group counseling to help students navigate personal and social issues, fostering emotional resilience and well-being.

  • College and Career Guidance: Guiding students in exploring career interests, navigating college applications, and planning for post-secondary education or careers.

  • Parental Support: Offering resources and support to parents, assisting them in understanding their child's academic and emotional needs.

  • Teacher Collaboration: Consulting with teachers to develop strategies for supporting student success and addressing academic and behavioral concerns.

  • Community Connections: Facilitating referrals to community resources and support services to meet students' diverse needs.

  • Post-Secondary Preparation: Networking with colleges and universities, providing information about post-secondary options, and supporting students in their transition to higher education.

  • Direct Counseling Services: Offering individual and group counseling sessions to address students' specific needs and foster personal growth.

  • Comprehensive Support: Providing a listening ear, offering guidance, and being a trusted advocate for students, families, and the school community.

Through these varied roles, school counselors play a vital part in nurturing student success and well-being, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all.

High school is a critical time for students to explore their futures. Through a robust counseling program, students gain valuable insights, experiences, and plans to prepare them for success in society. By collaborating with professional school counselors, parents, teachers, and the community, we can offer the best support for our youth.
