A new book vending machine at North Royalton Elementary School is encouraging students’ literacy skills and love of reading. Thanks to the PTA’s generosity, each teacher can reward up to eight students per classroom an opportunity to visit the vending machine to pick out a book of their choice.
Teachers will select students demonstrating strong literacy growth in areas like reading stamina, writing skills, reading level gains, and using strategies. Students can also be selected for applying literacy abilities in math, science and social studies.
“The book vending machine has been a positive addition to NRES,” said Literacy Coach Katie Bober.”It supports our mission to promote an excitement for literacy. Seeing a student’s face light up when their book drops is unforgettable. A special thank you goes out to our PTA for purchasing this incredible addition.”
The school is displaying photos of students with their vending machine picks on the morning announcements as well as the televisions that broadcast content throughout the school. The committee believes this type of promotion will encourage all of the students to want to get involved in this unique literacy incentive program.
“By sparking reading excitement and initiative through student-choice books, the vending machine encourages learners to keep honing skills,” said Principal Kirk Pavelich. “It provides a fun twist on literacy development at North Royalton Elementary School.”
