More than 150 student leaders were invited to attend the half-day event which focused on empowering students and equipping them with new leadership skills and mindsets to succeed in the classroom as well as their community. Joining the approximately 75 NRMS students were middle schoolers from Mayfield Middle School, Nordonia Middle School, Bay Village Middle School, Memorial Junior High (South Euclid Lyndhurst), Strongsville Middle School, Buckeye Junior High School (Medina), Harmon Middle School (Aurora) and Brunswick Middle School.
The conference agenda included an opening welcome from administrators and student organizers, followed by an introduction of Brian Miles. During the morning session, Miles got students out of their seats so they could begin making connections with one another. He discussed the “get to” moments that come with being a leader, and challenged students to get out of their comfort zones.
After the motivational keynote, students networked over lunch and took tours of school facilities. The afternoon featured a presentation by Miles. He focused on the link between the brain and physical performance, the power of moments, and using our understanding of both to succeed in academics, extracurricular activities, and more.
Event organizers, including NRMS Principal Erin Calabrese and Student Council members Avi Asur and Liesl Seidel, said that this leadership conference represented a special opportunity to learn from the tools and mindsets used by the most elite athletes. It promised to give students a better understanding of how their bodies prepare to face challenges, and created the potential to see a new way to view opportunities they encounter each day.
