North Royalton Elementary School (NRES) has officially launched its 3rd Annual Whole School Book Club, bringing students, families, and staff together for a shared reading experience. This year, the school is diving into Beverly Cleary’s beloved classic, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, thanks to the generous support of the Ellie Rechkemmer Grant, which provided a copy of the book for every family.

The Whole School Book Club is designed to foster a love of reading and strengthen connections between school and home. Each family is encouraged to set aside time throughout February to read the book together, following a school-wide reading schedule. Students can also access video read-alouds created by NRES staff to enhance the experience.

“Reading aloud as a family not only strengthens literacy skills but also creates a shared experience that brings us all together,” said Principal Kirk Pavelich. “Our goal is to build a community of readers where everyone—students, parents, teachers, and administrators—is engaged in the same story.”

To make the experience even more interactive, students will participate in daily trivia contests, with questions about The Mouse and the Motorcycle asked during morning announcements. Those with correct answers will have the chance to win prizes, keeping the excitement going throughout the month.

Community-Wide Scavenger Hunt & Fun Activities

In addition to reading, families can take part in a North Royalton-themed scavenger hunt, where students complete activity sheets and return them to their teachers. Other optional activities include a special "Driver’s License" challenge inspired by Ralph’s adventures in the book.

The Whole School Book Club will conclude with a Family Night Celebration on Friday, February 28, from 5-8 p.m. at NRES. Families will have the opportunity to shop the Scholastic Book Fair, enjoy food from local food trucks, participate in fun literacy-based activities, and celebrate the completion of the book together.

Throughout February, the halls of NRES will be filled with conversations about Ralph’s daring motorcycle rides, proving that a great book has the power to bring an entire school community together.
